Gold medals for Canada, narrow victories and a snow-covered outdoor game made the 2018 edition of the World Junior Hockey Championship a memorable one. But for tournament organizers, the biggest concern is that there was no one watching.
With a gold medal being an expectation rather than a possibility, Team Canada has failed to meet the “gold standard” expected of them, with the team winning only one gold medal since winning five in a row from 2005-2009.
In the Toronto sports market, expectations are always set to high. With only two playoff appearances over the last 10 years, it’s safe to say that the Toronto Maple Leafs have not met the hockey crazed city’s expectation for the club.
